Historical Development of COREG
The Conference of Registrars of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria was formed in 1973 by fourteen (14) visionary Registrars who saw the need for Registrars to associate and discuss issues affecting the administration of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria. At inception, the Association was known as Council of Registrars and Colleges of Technology (CORSEC). But no sooner was CORSEC formed than it went into dormancy for four (4) years (1973-1977). The 14 founding Institutions of CORSEC were:
- The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State
- Lagos State College of Science
- Akure College of Technology, Akure, Ondo State
- Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State
- Murtala College of Technology, Makurdi, Benue State
- Kwara State College of Technology, Ilorin, Kwara State
- College of Technology, Calabar, Cross River State
- Idah College of Technology, Idah, Kogi State
- Bida College of Technology, Bida, Niger State
- Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State
- Institute of Higher Education, Kano, Kano State
- Institute of Management & Technology, Enugu State
- Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State.
- Plateau State College of Technology, Bukuru, Plateau State
By 1978, the ‘Council’ was revived with a new name – Conference of Registrars of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology, (COREG) as against CORSEC.
The year 1979 witnessed the establishment of six new Federal Polytechnics at Ado-Ekiti, Bauchi, Bida, Idah, Ilaro and Mubi in Adamawa State. These new Polytechnics swelled the membership of COREG. As at today, COREG has 55 members across the Country, comprising both Government and private-owned Polytechnics/Colleges of Technology in Nigeria.
Mr. Chairman, we must appreciate the 14 pioneer members of CORSEC for their vision in charting a roadmap for the 21st century Registrars of Polytechnic and Colleges of Technology to follow.
